Strawbana Chai Smoothie

Today I have a very special guest blogger, my best friend for years, Alexandra Finn-Atkins! Alex loves to make delicious smoothies and protein shakes to drink for her post workout meals. Here she shares a Valentines Day Smoothie Recipe!

After having reconstructive surgery on my ACL last October, I am just starting to get back into running! I have completed three marathons in the past two years and am eager to get back out there!

Smoothies are integral to my diet while training for a marathon. After a long run, the last thing you feel like eating is a big meal…but you have to refuel! Smoothies are the easiest way to quickly consume a mix of carbs and protein for muscle repair. And they are delicious!

During my recovery from surgery I started drinking lots of tea! Black teas, green teas, peppermint tea, chocolate mint tea, basically any tea I could get my hands on. While on a mandatory break from any cardio activity, tea was a comfort to my new “lazy” lifestyle.

Now that I am beginning to run again, I thought I would combine my old love of creating nutritious and delicious smoothies and my new love of tea! This recipe is called the “Strawbana Chai Smoothie.”

Ingredients:
½ cup strongly brewed Chai Tea (chilled)
1 Banana
8 Strawberries (frozen or fresh)
½ cup Greek yogurt
1 cup almond milk
1 teaspoon brewer’s yeast




Directions:
Brew chai tea prepared according to directions on package and then chill. Chai is rich in antioxidants and spices that have for years promoted general health and well-being. I prefer Celestial Honey Vanilla Chai tea. It’s both environmentally “friendly,” inexpensive and super tasty!

Fill half of the blender with ice, add strawberries, banana, yogurt, milk, tea, and brewer’s yeast. Brewer’s yeast is an excellent source of B vitamins and chromium, the nutrients necessary for blood sugar regulation and energy production. This makes it the perfect supplement for diabetics and those with hypoglycemia. Sometimes I will substitute the brewer’s yeast for flax seed and/or wheat germ. 


Blend well and enjoy!
